Q. What happens if I need to cancel my appointment?

We ask that you give us a minimum of 24 hours notice if you need to cancel the appointment.

Calm and Clear has a 24 hour cancellation policy, which means that you may be charged if cancellations are made with less than 24 hours notice.

Q. Can I combine more than one treatment together?

Absolutely!  In fact, sometimes it often enhances the treatment if you combine more than one at the same time.

Ideally any combination of treatments should be done with a 1 1/2 hour appointment to make sure that you get the best of both treatments.  However, 1 hour combination treatments can also be done.

Examples of a combined treatment are:

  • Aromatherapy massage with reflexology
  • Facial Rejuvenation with Holistic Facial
  • Hopi ear candling with Facial Rejuvenation
  • Indian head massage with Hopi ear candling
  • Reflexology with Hopi ear candling
  • Reflexology with Holistic facial

Other examples of combined therapies can be found on our Combination Treatments page.

It is best to contact us if you would like to discuss having a combination treatment, so that we can work out the best combination for you.

Q. Which oils will you use for my treatment?

At Calm and Clear we do not use pre-blended or pre-mixed oils.

Reflexology Query

Q. I have ticklish feet, can I still have reflexology?

Yes, absolutely!

The specific finger and thumb techniques which are used work deeply into a precise point, so it does not cause a ticklish sensation.  The pressure is always kept firm enough for it not to be ticklish.

Q. I have a verucca, can I still have a treatment?

Reflexologists use things like veruccas, corns, bunions and callouses as signs about a person's health.  It is generally fine to receive a treatment if you have one of these things, but please ensure that any veruccas are covered up with a plaster before the treatment to prevent any cross-infection.

If you are unsure if you can still have a treatment then please contact us.

Q. Does reflexology hurt?

Overall, reflexology is deeply relaxing.  However, if there is an area of congestion specific pressure points may feel slightly tender when the are worked on by the reflexologist.

The sensations can vary from person to person but may feel like a bruise, pin prick or electricity jolts.  At the time of your treatment the reflexologist will discuss the sensations with you and can deal with them at the time.

If you don't feel any tenderness or sensations then it does not mean that the treatment isn't working.  It could just mean that during that particular treatment there were no deeply sensitive pressure points.

Indian Head Massage Query

Q. Will you be putting oil in my hair?

Oil is only used in your hair if you specifically request it - or if we have agreed this in advance.

Usually the Indian Head Massage treatments do not use oil.  However, in some instances oils can be extremely beneficial for the scalp and hair.  If you do not wish to have oil in your hair at the time of the massage then we can advise you about oils which you can use at home.

Any corporate based Indian head massage will never involve the use of oils.

Q. Will I need to get un-dressed?

The Indian Head Massage treatment is done with you sitting fully dressed in a chair.

There is no need for you to undress as the massage can be done through the clothes.

Facial Rejuvenation and Holistic Facial Query

Q. What is the difference between the Facial Rejuvenation and the Holistic Facial?

The Facial Rejuvenation massage (also called the Indian Face Massage or Natural Facelift massage) is a 1 hour face massage treatment, which does not use any products. This treatment gently tones and lifts the skin, and leaves the mind feeling deeply relaxed and energised.  It has been known to help reduce fine lines.

The Holistic Facial is a 1 hour traditional facial with a twist.  Selected natural and organic products are used to cleanse, tone, exfoliate and massage your skin to leave it deeply cleansed and nourished.  The "twist" is the facial diagnosis techniques which are used to link the internal health with the external.

The Ultimate Facial Combination is a 90 minutes treatment, which combines a mini facial with the Facial Rejuvenation massage. The mini facial uses the best organic skincare products to deeply cleanse and nourish the skin. The whole treatment has the benefits of the Facial Rejuvenation, plus the added benefits of the organic mini facial.

Q. What is an otoscope, and why do you use it?

An otoscope is a special medical instrument which allows the practitioner to see inside your ear.  It is very similar to the instrument your doctor uses to look in your ears too, and consists of a magnifying glass with a light.

The otoscope allows the practitioner to examine the external part of your ear and also the ear drum.  It will highlight any problems within the ears that you may not be aware of, and also shows the practitioner what the general health of the ears are like.  This way they can give you the best treatment and best aftercare advice.  Also, there may be reasons why you cannot have a treatment, such as an ear drum perforation or redness/inflammation in the ear, and these things cannot be seen without the use of the otoscope.

At Calm and Clear we are trained and insured to use the otoscope to protect you, and ensure you have the very best treatment possible.

Q. Do you do a face massage with the ear candling treatment?

Generally yes we do.

The ear candling is normally followed by a relaxing and soothing face massage.  This massage aids the action of the ear candles and ensures that the blocked air and sinuses are cleared, and also aids the lymphatic drainage.

Many of our clients like to have an extended face massage so they combine the ear candling treatment with the Facial Rejuvenation massage into a 90 minutes treatment.  Other clients prefer to have a reflexology treatment done on their feet following the ear candling.

Q. What advice do you have for me following an ear candling treatment?

Following an ear candling treatment your body will begin to rid itself of unwanted products such as toxins. This is your body’s natural reaction to your treatment and is a vital part of the detoxification process to restore balance. Due to this you may experience some temporary post treatment effects, particularly after your first treatment.

These include:

  • Feeling “spaced out” or light headed
  • Thirsty
  • A runny nose
  • Dripping down the back of the throat
  • Popping of the ears
  • Sleepy/tired

Over the following 24-48 hours, you can help alleviate some of these symptoms and assist your body’s clearing process by:

  • Drinking plenty of water
  • Reduce caffeine and alcohol intake
  • Eat light meals
  • Listen to your body – rest if you feel tired
  • Avoid water sports such as swimming
  • Avoid cold winds and draughts as the ears are more sensitive
  • Do not poke your ears with cotton buds or any other instruments as you can push the wax in further and damage the ear drum
  • Reduce your intake of dairy products as they create excess mucous in the body

Q. Can I see the residue in the candle at the end, and what does it mean?

If you would like to see the remainder of residue in the candle at the end of your session then please inform your practitioner at the start.  We do not normally show this unless it is specially requested.

A properly trained Thermo-Auricular Therapy (Ear Candling) practitioner is able to identify problems in the ear by watching for signs in the candle as it burns down.  Looking at the amount of residue left at the end can also show if there is a greater problem and possibly how often treatments would need to be had.  Usually the worse the problem (such as compacted wax or chronic sinus problems) the more residue there is, meaning the client would benefit from weekly treatments to start with.

At Calm and Clear Complementary Therapies we do not believe that the residue in the candle is ear wax.  The residue is normally found above the filter, which indicates that the residue is from the burning of the candle itself rather than from the ear.  The residue is composed of the ingredients which make up the candle, including beeswax and honey.  If the candle was burned down without inserting it into an ear there would still be residue above the filter, which shows this to be from the candle itself rather than ear wax.  It is more the amount of residue which is important to the practitioner.

Q. How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments required varies from person to person, and you will be given a much better idea at your first appointment.

Generally speaking (though not necessarily for everyone):

For the first course of treatment - treatment 2 should be 1 week after the first treatment.

Treatment 3 should be 2 weeks after treatment 2.

Subsequent treatments are then according to client's needs.

In acute cases this may even to daily up to 4 days.

Monthly treatments usually help to prevent any recurrence.

People are individuals, and so they all respond differently to treatments.  The longer there is a problem, the more treatments may be required.

Please contact us if you have any queries.
