Aromatherapy is a therapeutic treatment which uses aromatic essential oils for physical and emotional well-being.
Therapeutic use covers both mind and body, whereas aromatic substances tend to be the essential oils.
As a treatment, Aromatherapy is usually combined with body-contact therapy in the form of massage. The nature of Aromatherapy is as a holistic treatment, restoring balance to mind and body, as well as its specific use in treating a wide range of symptoms.
Essential oils are pure, concentrated plant extracts obtained specifically for their fragrance and therapeutic value. The chemical composition of these oils is very complex, and varies for each oil. Any part of a plant may contain it’s essential oil – flowers, leaves, fruit, stems, wood, bark, seeds, resin, berries and roots. It is the essential oil that gives the plant its characteristic smell and flavour.
Human touch can have a profound effect on physical and emotional wellbeing. Massage therapy uses the therapeutic use of touch, mostly with the hands, but can also include elbows or feet!
Through the use of a variety of special techniques the massage can be developed for the individual. It can be comforting and soothing or stimulating and energising, helping to let go of toxins from the body. You will leave the table feeling lighter and rejuvenated.
Massage can improve the circulation of blood flow around the body, bringing fresh oxygen to body tissues. This brings vital nutrients to the tissue and can assist in the elimination of waste products from the area. This has been said to speed healing after injury, enhance recovery from disease, and also improve the structure and look of the muscles and skin.
At Calm and Clear Complementary Therapies we use different styles of massage for each person, including Swedish massage techniques with deep tissue massage techniques to create a truly muscle melting experience. Depending on your needs the massage can be deeply relaxing or intense and rejuvenating.
All massages are customised to your needs using only the finest and purest organic essential oils and base oils, all packed full of vitamins and skin caring ingredients

A full consultation is taken before the treatment, checking for any contraindications to treatment. Details about your general health, medication, diet and hobbies will be discussed.
The treatment itself is held in a warm, comfortable room where you will be asked to undress down to your underwear, and lie on the couch. You will be fully covered with towels throughout the massage, and only the parts of the body being massaged will be uncovered.
A bespoke blend of essential oils and vegetable base oils will be mixed at the time of the treatment, taking into account your mind, body and spirit requirements on the day, giving an overall holistic treatment. Organic oils are used wherever they are available.
A massage, tailor made for your needs, will then commence. Each treatment can be from half an hour, one hour to one and a half hours, this can vary depending upon your personal needs.
An indulgent one and half hour aromatherapy massage usually includes a facial and head massage.
A one hour aromatherapy massage usually includes the whole body minus a facial and head massage.
A half hour aromatherapy massage usually includes a luxurious back, neck and shoulders treatment.
However, we can discuss specific massage requirements with you at the time of the treatment, so your massage may vary from these listed above. The aromatherapy treatment can also be combined with any of the other Calm and Clear therapies.
After the massage you will be given some follow up and after care advice. General lifestyle advice will also be given related to your individual needs, including some dietary advice and muscle stretching. Some information about using essential oils at home may also be given with full instructions.

Aromatherapy Massage is wonderful at any time in our life, but it can be particularly beneficial during pregnancy. Pregnancy is a wonderful time for most women, but during the 40 weeks there are many changes occurring, both physical and hormonal. These changes can cause a variety of problems including back pain, swollen ankles, swollen feet and fingers, morning sickness and a change in emotions. Maternity Massage can help with general relaxation of both mother and baby, and may help in preparation for birth.
Each Pregnancy Massage treatment is safely tailored according to each person, so it may be on a massage couch, or on a chair if necessary. Cushions and bolsters are used for comfort and safety.
The Calm and Clear Complementary Therapies Maternity Aromatherapy Massages are safe to use at all stages of pregnancy.
Aromatherapy is an excellent way to de-stress, re-energise and relieve tension. Essential oils can be extremely useful for couples who are trying to conceive, to use during your pregnancy, for labour and for post natal recovery. Essential oils can also be safely used on babies over 3 months old.
Regular aromatherapy massage may be very beneficial for both mother and baby at all stages of pregnancy from a qualified Maternity Massage/Aromatherapy practitioner.
The Aromatherapist will give the mother an hour of uninterrupted indulgence and pampering, and most pregnant women find that it helps with the various problems that occur while pregnant.
At home while you are pregnant you can use essential oils as a massage oil, in the bath, in the shower or in a diffuser to fragrance a room – but never as a douche. Blended oils for pregnancy and babies are of a lower strength than blended oils in a clinic. Please consult an Aromatherapist or a good aromatherapy book before using them at home.
Essential Oils can also be used in the delivery room during a massage to aid with labour, and also in an oil burner to help relax you. The use of essential oils during labour is now used in many different birth centres in hospitals, as it has been recognised to aid the mother and baby. Please speak to your midwife to check if this is possible when planning your birth plan.
