Ayurvedic Kansa Vatki (KV) Foot Massage™

What is Kansa Vatki Foot Massage™?

Kansa Vatki Foot Massage™, or KV Foot Massage, is a beautiful and unique massage, which has it’s roots in Ayurveda and Marma therapy. The treatment focuses on the lower legs and feet only, and helps with balancing the whole body.

The main focus of the treatment involves being massaged with a metal bowl called the Kansa Vatki, which is made from 3 different metals. The 3 metals used are copper, zinc and tin. Copper is thought to help in reducing pain, inflammation, and arthritis, zinc is thought to help in proper functioning of the immune system and digestion and tin is believed to be helpful in digestion, relieving headaches and insomnia.

Ghee (clarified butter) plus some other oils are used depending upon the reasons for the treatment and your own constitution.

Ayurvedic medicine is the traditional form of medicine used in India, and is the father of all modern medicine. Evidence of Ayurvedic foot massage can be traced to 5000 years ago. In Ayurvedic philosophy the belief is that this specific foot massage balances out the tri-doshas – Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Tri means three. Dosha is the basic physical energy, meaning “that which changes”, and in Ayurveda it is your mind and body type. We each have all 3 of the doshas within us, however, they are in different proportions for every person – making it a totally unique mix for each individual. E.g. One person can be primarily Pitta, secondary Kapha and thirdly vata (least prominent). When the doshas are in balance we remain healthy and there is a free flow of energy (Prana) around the body. The flow of prana around the body is assisted by the 7 chakras. These chakras are also reflected on our feet, and so during this massage by working on the associated chakra areas on the feet the main chakras are also balanced.

Marma massage is a traditional Indian therapy, and is derived from a branch of martial arts. There are 107 main Marma pressure points around the body, 12 of which can be found on the lower legs and feet. Working these points can help to relieve certain conditions around the body and free the energy flow.

This treatment can be taken alone, or is ideal if combined with reflexology or aromatherapy massage. It is generally fine for use during pregnancy too.

What Happens During a Treatment

The Kansa Vatki Foot Massage™ treatment begins with a detailed consultation to enable us to find out more about any conditions you have, to be aware of any contraindications and to ensure that we give the very best treatment for your requirements.

You will be asked to remove your shoes and socks, and to roll up your trousers to above the knees. You will then either be asked to lie flat on your back, or slightly reclined. There will be supports for both your head and knees, and you will be covered with a blanket.

After this we will cleanse your feet and legs – and use either the ghee or a selected oil. The massage itself involves a specific sequence, including being massaged with the Kansa Vatki. At times your legs and feet will be massaged manually using our hands in a variety of specific massage movements. One foot is treated at a time, so that you get an intense, but revitalising and relieving treatment for each leg.
