Preconceptual Care
Getting pregnant is not as easy for some couples as it is for others. Aromatherapy can help both men and women with fertility problems by helping to relax, and therefore aiding the conception. It can eventually
help with menstrual problems and sperm motility and production. Any infertility treatments should be done looking at all aspects of your life, including diet and emotions.
Pregnancy
Regular Aromatherapy and Pregnancy Massages can be very beneficial for both mother and baby after the first trimester of pregnancy. The Pregnancy Massage from an Aromatherapist will give the mother an
hour of uninterrupted indulgence and pampering, and can help with the various problems that occur while pregnant.
Each Pregnancy Massage treatment will be safely tailored accordingly, so it may be on a massage couch, or on a chair if necessary. Cushions and bolsters are used for comfort and safety. If it is on a massage
couch, you may be asked to lie on your side if you are into the later part of your pregnancy and you are no longer able to lie on your front.
At home while you are pregnant you can use essential oils as massage oil, in the bath, in the shower or in a diffuser to fragrance a room - never as a douche. Blended oils for pregnancy and babies are of a lower
strength than normally blended oils. Please consult your aromatherapist or a good book before using them at home.
Pregnancy Massage and Aromatherapy can help with all of the following problems during the pregnancy:
Morning sickness
Headaches
Pain & discomfort
Stretch marks
Backache
Stress & anxiety
Lack of sleep & fatigue
Digestive problems e.g. constipation, heartburn
Fluid retention - Swollen/puffy ankles & legs
Cramp
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
General emotional problems
Labour & Birth
Essential Oils can also be used in the delivery room during a massage to help with labour, and also in an oil burner to help relax you. The use of essential oils and Aromatherapy during labour is now used in many
different birth centres in hospitals, as it has been recognised to aid the mother and baby.
Please speak to your midwife to
check if this is
possible when
planning your birth plan.
If you are in doubt about any aspect of aromatherapy you should seek the advice of a professional Aromatherapist.
After Your New Arrival
Life with a new baby can be difficult for both parents. You will have many sleepless nights, nappy changes, feeding etc, whilst still trying to juggle the rest of your life! This can cause a great deal of stress to
both parents, and the mother also has to deal with a new set of hormones and a rebalance of the other hormones.
Aromatherapy can be invaluable in helping with all the problems, for both mother and father.
Aromatherapy can help to:
Calm and clear the mind and body
Re-energise and revitalise - Increase energy levels
Re-balances the hormones
Prevent post-natal depression
Improve back pain after epidural
Helps with postural problems from carrying baby
There are certain contra-indications to Aromatherapy treatment, and there are some essential oils that should not be used in stages of pregnancy. In these cases Aromatherapy may not be able to be carried out.
