Indian Head Massage

What is Indian Head Massage?

Indian Champissage™ is a simple, safe and highly beneficial therapy which has been popular throughout the Indian sub-continent for over a thousand years. Massage of the scalp, face, neck and shoulders soothes, comforts and rebalances to produce a feeling of peace and tranquility. Additional benefits can be gained from the optional use of special oils to nourish hair roots, promoting improvement in the condition of the hair and even reducing hair loss.

The style of Indian Head Massage used in the West has been devised by the late Mr Narendra Mehta of The London Centre of Indian Champissage™. It is based on the traditional form of Champi (head massage) practised in India for over 1,000 years and is based on the Ayurvedic principles. Rima Shah at Calm and Clear Complementary Therapies® has been trained directly by Mr Narendra Mehta in this form of rejuvenating Indian Head Massage.

It is a wonderfully relaxing therapy which is based on the ancient Ayurvedic healing system and Chakra balancing. The massage is safe and very effective, without the need to undress or use oils. It has been used by clients to aid relief from aches and pains, stress symptoms, sleep issues, aid hair growth, providing a deep sense of peace, calm and tranquility.

Massage has always played an important part in Indian life. It features in the earliest Ayurvedic texts, which date back nearly 5000 years. Indian infants often receive a daily massage from birth until they are three years old to keep them supple and in good health. From three to six years of age, they are massaged once or twice a week. After six years of age, they are taught to share a massage with family members. Massage occurs across the generations in India as an integral part of family life. Indian Champissage™ springs from this rich tradition of family grooming.

Head massage has been practised for over a thousand years. The concept was originally developed by women who used different oils according to the season (coconut, sesame, almond, olive oil, herbal oils, buttermilk, mustard oil and henna) and individual needs to keep their long hair strong, lustrous and in beautiful condition.

The style of Indian Head Massage used at Calm and Clear Complementary Therapies® uses many of the traditional methods used in India – and is usually done without the use of oils, but these can be used if required.

It is an ideal treatment to have in the modern office as it targets the areas of the body most in need of some TLC and soothing, and as no-one needs to undress so there’s no time wasted in preparation. The price of stress can be lapses in concentration, low morale and edginess which can lead to low productivity. It takes up very little space and the whole process can be designed to take no more than 15-20 minutes.

What happens during a treatment?

At Calm and Clear Complementary Therapies® a full consultation is taken before the treatment, checking for any contraindications to treatment. Details about general health, medication, diet and hobbies will be discussed. The treatment is done with the client sitting fully dressed on a comfortable chair. A towel will only be used if the client requires the use of special Ayurvedic massage oils on the head.

Each appointment lasts 45 minutes and depending upon the client’s personal needs and if there are oils used. If done in an office or corporate environment the massage time can be adapted to suit so that it lasts no longer than 15-20 minutes.

The massage includes the shoulders, upper arms, neck, head and face and is completed with the balancing of the 3 higher Chakras, to leave your head feeling Calm and Clear® – and giving you a general feeling of health and happiness.

Following the massage after care advice is given. General lifestyle advice will also be given related to your individual needs, including some dietary advice and muscle stretching. Some information about using Ayurvedic oils at home may also be given if it’s appropriate.
