Reflexology Lymph Drainage

calm (25)

Thank you very much for my reflexology treatment yesterday. I wanted to tell you that it has had fantastic benefits for me. I slept much better and I have been breathing much better (in my stomach). This makes me feel better. And most amazingly, the swelling seems to have gone down a little, and is certainly feeling less uncomfortable.

I am so grateful and I am in awe of your talents!

What is Reflexology Lymph Drainage?

Reflexology Lymph Drainage (RLD) is an award-winning evidence based reflexology technique which focuses on stimulating the lymphatic reflexes on the feet. The aim is to cause an effect on the lymphatic system in the body. It is a unique sequence that has been researched and developed by Sally Kay, while working in Cancer Care. The results appear to support the theory of reflexology.

RLD is a gentle form of reflexology aimed at moving the lymph under the skin, however it does not involve draining the whole of the lymphatic system away. It aids the formation and transport of lymph around the body.

The lymphatic system has many functions in the body. It forms an important part of our immune system and is also designed to assist in the removal of waste products from the cells of the body.

The circulation of the lymphatic system is not mechanically controlled by the body, therefore this system has to rely on muscular movement, blood circulation and the nervous system to assist circulation around the body.

The lymphatic system can become very sluggish and doesn’t work at it’s best due to a variety of reasons, including lack of muscular movement, poor diets, disease and infections. A sluggish lymphatic system can lead to the body not eliminating it’s waste efficiently, and this can lead to the body suffering from a build-up of lymph which shows as an oedema, or water retention.

This gentle technique is designed to activate the musculature of the lymph vessel system so that they contract more often, there by increasing the rate of absorption of fluid and waste products from the surrounding tissues. It is a non-invasive way to remove excess fluid and waste products more quickly.

This is an excellent treatment for anyone suffering from primary or secondary lymphoedema, lipoedema or recovering from any surgery.

Who is Reflexology Lymph Drainage for?

Reflexology Lymph drainage is for anyone who may be experiencing issues with their lymphatic system.

This is a great way to support you in a complementary way.

It's effective for any issues that you have Manual Lymph Drainage for too.

There have been many benefits reported from receiving Reflexology Lymph Drainage and Manual Lymph Drainage, and a lot of research has been done for this RLD/MLD have been used both as a preventative and as remedial methods.

Some of the conditions clients have used RLD/MLD for includes:

  • Pregnancy related water retention
  • Hormonal issues
  • Stress and anxiety – deeply relaxes and soothes
  • Aiding a detox programme
  • Sinus congestion
  • Migraines/headaches
  • Toothache (non-infected)
  • Pre and post dental work
  • Pre and post Cosmetic surgery – to aid healing and reduce swelling
  • Bloating
  • Puffy eyes
  • Recovery from chronic infections
  • Fluid congestion
  • For general well being

By encouraging the removal of waste and excess, stagnant connective tissue fluid the skin gets its nutrients more quickly and begins to look fantastic.

How does Reflexology Lymph Drainage work?

The care is focused around the people rather than symptoms.

We combine conventional and complementary therapies which focus on treating the whole person, rather than just isolated symptoms. This is called "integrative medicine".

Reflexology Lymph Drainage uses specific treatment protocols as created from research by Sally Kay, based on Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD).

The treatment is done on the feet, as with other forms of reflexology offered by Calm and Clear© .

What happens during a Reflexology lymph drainage treatment?

When you first book your initial appointment we will send you links to complete out detailed consultation forms and questionnaires.

At the first appointment we will go into more detail about your health and well-being, using the completed questionnaires and any medical results.  From this it will provide a better picture about the best way to proceed with the reflexology lymph drainage.

You will be asked to relax in a reclined position, either on a massage couch or recliner, in a darkened room and made as comfortable as possible with blankets and pillows and soft music.

The feet will then be treated using the specific finger/thumb microstimulation technique of the pressure points. Either an oil based balm or powder may be used on the areas that are being worked on.  The type of movements and pressures will vary throughout and will be personalised for your needs at that time.

During the treatment you may feel some tenderness or textures in certain parts of the feet, or possibly around the body.

Follow up and after care advice will be given at the end of the session, and possibly some “homework”, where you will be shown how to work specific points on your hands yourself in between treatments. General lifestyle advice, including dietary advice will also be given related to your individual needs.

Following the session you will be emailed more detailed information and advice regarding your treatments and discussions will be made about the best schedule of treatments for your needs.

Further follow up treatments are 1 hour long, where the focus will vary each time.

There is currently ongoing research into the use of this technique to help women who have secondary lymphoedema following breast cancer. More on that here: http://www.reflexologylymphdrainage.co.uk/research.html.

The general benefits of the treatment are the same as for all Manual Lymph Drainage treatments, but has the added benefit of not having to get un-dressed other than removing shoes and socks. It is ideal if you enjoy reflexology treatments.

This video above provides some more information about the treatment and the on going research.
