What is Reflexology?

A general definition of reflexology from the CNHC (to fit in with the ASA regulations):

Reflexology is a complementary therapy based on the belief that there are reflex areas in the feet and hands which are believed to correspond to all the organs and parts of the body. Some practitioners may also include work on points in the face and ears. Reflexology works on an individual bases and may alleviate and improve symptoms such as everyday stress and tension.

During a typical reflexology session the reflexologist will take a detailed medical history. Sessions are usually performed in a comfortable chair or couch. If it is to be performed on a the feet, the client will be asked to remove footwear and socks but other forms of reflexology require no removal of clothing. The practitioner will make a visual and tactile examination of the area to be worked before beginning the precise reflexology movements.

Reflexology can be a wonderfully relaxing experience where you can take time out from everyday pressures. The therapist’s expert touch will help you to relax which can help improve mood, aid sleep and relieve tension. The result is an overall sense of well-being.

What Happens During a Treatment?

A full detailed consultation is taken before the treatment, checking for any contraindications to treatment. Details about your general health, medication, diet and hobbies will be discussed. You will then be asked to relax in a reclined position, either on a massage couch or recliner, and made as comfortable as possible.

The feet or hands will then be treated using the specific finger/thumb microstimulation technique of the pressure points. Either an oil based balm or powder may be used on the areas that are being worked on.

During the treatment you may feel some tenderness or textures in certain parts of the feet/hands. To aid the treatment you will be given a luxurious foot massage at the start and end of each treatment.

Follow up and after care advice will be given at the end of the session, and possibly some “homework”, where you will be shown how to work specific points on your hands yourself in between treatments. General lifestyle advice, including dietary advice will also be given related to your individual needs.

Full treatments are 1 hour long, where specific concerns can be looked at further.

The reflexology sessions can also be combined with any of the other therapies into a 1 ½ hour treatment or can be longer if there is a more specific consultation required (such as with fertility).
